John is Co-Director of Big Ideas By The Sea festival, independent archaeologist, and former City of York Archaeologist 1989-2019.
John Oxley is an independent archaeologist, and former City of York Archaeologist 1989-2019. He is Co-Director of Big Ideas By The Sea CIC and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Together with Chris Hall and Marie Woods he has organised the Big Dig.
He is passionate about communicating with different audiences and encouraging people to take part in archaeology and write their own archaeological stories. He has lectured, advised and worked on archaeological projects in China, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Sweden and Russia. He is also a photographer and film-maker and has successful collaborations with artists in Yorkshire and beyond.
